I write today having almost completed a semester learning about social media. Today I'm going to sum up some of the most important takeaways from the semester.
1. Plan ahead, but expect the unexpected
One of the great lessons I learned is that as much as you want to plan ahead for posting,
sometimes things pop up that are unexpected. As a social media practitioner one needs to adhere
to their calendar as much as possible, but always think on your toes and be refreshing social
media in case something pops up like a new trend, a world event, or a trending hash tag.
2. Stay up to date with trends
As stated briefly before, it's important to stay up to date with what's happening on social media.
One should keep certain lists on twitter and saved searches, monitor certain hash tags and check
what's trending or popular on different social media apps. It's also important to keep up to date
with new social media apps, and try those out too, because you can find a whole new audience.
3. Curate content that's unique and showcases your voice
Staying up to date on what's trendy and popular is great, but when everyone's posting the same
exact content it can get scrolled past with ease. Try to figure out your brand's voice and showcase
it with unique posts, or take a current trend and put your own spin on it to stand out.
4. Know your audience
Really take some time to think about who your audience is what they're after. Learn about what
demographics each app appeals to and keep that in mind when considering which apps you use in
relation to what demographics pay attention to your organization. Also, engage with your
audience's comments, posts, and shares.
These were just a few things I learned in class this semester, but I've gained so much more knowledge than that. Each week I've seen more examples of what great social media looks like and learned how to take the steps to get there. Social media work is so comprehensive and there are so many tools and resources to help you. Overall, I've learned a lot and gained a great knowledge on social media as a whole, how to post, what to post, and more.
